iPhone Apps That Hide Messages: What Actually Works

GuideUpdated 7 min read

Short answer: No iPhone app can hide texts inside Apple’s Messages app; iOS doesn’t give other apps access to your messages. What works: lock the Messages app with Face ID, turn off message previews, and hide alerts for one conversation. For chats that need their own lock, use a messaging app like WhatsApp, whose Chat Lock hides chats behind a secret code.

This guide is for anyone who shares a phone, hands it to others, or just wants private conversations out of sight. It covers what Apple’s Messages can do first, then the three big messaging apps. Steps checked against Apple’s iPhone User Guide for iOS 26 and later.

Many “hide messages” articles describe a Hide button or a hidden folder in Messages. Apple’s documentation doesn’t list one. Hide Alerts only silences a conversation; it stays in your list.

Option 1: Lock the Messages app (built in)

Since iOS 18, you can make an app ask for Face ID before it opens. Messages isn’t on Apple’s list of built-in apps that can’t be locked.

  1. On the Home Screen, touch and hold Messages.
  2. Tap Require Face ID (or Touch ID or Passcode).
  3. Tap it again and confirm with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.

A locked app’s contents don’t show in notification previews, search or Siri suggestions. When you leave the app, it locks again. The lock only applies to this iPhone; it doesn’t sync.

You can’t hide Messages itself. Apps that come with iOS 18 or later can be locked, but not moved to the Hidden folder.

Option 2: Keep messages off the Lock Screen

Message previews show the text on your Lock Screen to anyone nearby.

  1. Go to Settings > Notifications > Show Previews.
  2. Choose When Unlocked (text shows only after you unlock) or Never.

To change only Messages, go to Settings > Notifications, tap Messages under Notification Style, then tap Show Previews.

Option 3: Hide alerts for one conversation

Use this when one person’s messages shouldn’t pop up on your screen.

  1. Open Messages.
  2. Swipe left on the conversation.
  3. Tap the Hide Alerts button (the bell).

You can also open the conversation, tap the name at the top and turn on Hide Alerts. This stops notifications for that conversation only. It stays in your conversation list, in full view.

Option 4: Delete, then empty Recently Deleted

If a conversation shouldn’t be on your phone at all, delete it. Deleted messages stay in Recently Deleted for 30 to 40 days, so check there too.

  1. In Messages, tap Filters on the conversations page (on iOS 18, tap Edit).
  2. Tap Recently Deleted.
  3. Select the conversations and delete them.

To clear old conversations automatically, go to Settings > Apps > Messages > Keep Messages and choose a period. Conversations older than that are removed, attachments included. Deleting applies to every device signed in to your Apple Account.

Option 5: A messaging app with its own lock

Third-party messaging apps can lock or hide their own chats. They can’t touch your iMessages or SMS. You and the other person both need the same app.

WhatsApp: Chat Lock

Chat Lock is the closest thing to hidden conversations on iPhone. Touch and hold a chat to lock it. Locked chats move to a Locked Chats folder, opened with your passcode or Face ID, and their contents are hidden in notifications. You can add a secret code that is different from your iPhone passcode, then hide the folder. The chats then appear only when you type the code in the search bar.

Signal: Screen Lock and disappearing messages

Signal’s Screen Lock locks the whole app with your iPhone passcode, Face ID or Touch ID. It doesn’t use a separate code. Disappearing messages delete messages after a timer you set per chat, up to four weeks. The timer only applies to messages sent after you set it.

Telegram: passcode and Secret Chats

Telegram lets you set an app passcode under Settings > Privacy and Security. Regular chats use server-client encryption and sync through Telegram’s cloud. Secret Chats are end-to-end encrypted, stay only on the device where you started them, and can delete themselves on a timer.

Messaging apps compared

From each app’s US App Store listing and the developer’s help pages, checked 27 Oct 2026. Features change; check before you rely on one.

App Price Lock a single chat Lock the whole app Separate code Disappearing messages Rating
Apple Messages Free, built in No Yes, Require Face ID No No n/a
WhatsApp Messenger Free Yes, Chat Lock Yes, Require Face ID Yes, secret code for locked chats Not covered here 4.7 (about 18.8 million ratings)
Signal - Private Messenger Free, no ads No Yes, Screen Lock No Yes, up to 4 weeks 4.7 (about 1.1 million ratings)
Telegram Messenger Free No Yes, app passcode Yes, app passcode Yes, in Secret Chats 4.0 (about 284,000 ratings)

You can also hide WhatsApp, Signal or Telegram themselves: touch and hold the icon, tap Require Face ID, then Hide and Require Face ID. The app moves to the Hidden folder in App Library.

What this doesn’t protect

  • Anyone who knows your iPhone passcode. It opens a locked Messages app, the Hidden folder and any app lock that uses Face ID. Only a separate code, like WhatsApp’s secret code or a Telegram passcode, avoids this.
  • The other person’s copy. Hiding or deleting a message on your phone does nothing to theirs. They can screenshot it or forward it.
  • Your other devices. App locks don’t sync. A Mac or iPad signed in to your Apple Account may still show your iMessages unless you lock or check it too.
  • Backups. Messages in an iCloud or computer backup can be restored later.
  • The app’s existence. A hidden app’s name still shows in places like Screen Time, battery usage and your purchase history.
  • Your carrier and the network. SMS texts aren’t end-to-end encrypted. Hiding them on your phone doesn’t change who can see them in transit.
  • Someone who controls your phone or account. If you’re worried someone is monitoring you, Apple’s Safety Check (in Settings > Privacy & Security) is the place to start, not a hiding app.

How we checked this

We checked every iOS step against Apple’s own documentation (support.apple.com and the iPhone User Guide) on 27 Oct 2026, for iOS 26 and later. The WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram details come from their App Store listings and the developers’ help pages and blog posts on the same date. We haven’t tested this guide on a device yet.

Methods compared

Method Hides the conversation Opens with your iPhone passcode Separate code Works for iMessage and SMS
Lock Messages (Require Face ID) Partly: the whole app is locked Yes No Yes
Show Previews: When Unlocked Lock Screen only Yes No Yes
Hide Alerts No, only silences it n/a No Yes
Delete + empty Recently Deleted Removes it from your devices n/a No Yes
WhatsApp Chat Lock with secret code Yes No, with a secret code Yes No, WhatsApp chats only
Cubbylock (in development) Not a messaging app Designed not to Designed to use its own code No; designed for notes and files, such as screenshots you need to keep

For most people, a locked Messages app plus previews set to When Unlocked is enough. If someone else knows your passcode, move the private conversation to an app with its own code. If you need to keep a screenshot or a note from a conversation, store it somewhere with its own lock; see secure folder on iPhone or how to lock notes on iPhone.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an app that hides text messages on iPhone?

No app can hide or lock conversations inside Apple's Messages app; iOS doesn't let other apps reach your texts. You can lock the whole Messages app with Face ID, or move private conversations to a messaging app that has its own chat lock, such as WhatsApp.

Can you hide a conversation in iPhone Messages without deleting it?

Not in a hidden folder. Hide Alerts only stops notifications for that conversation. To keep it out of sight, lock the Messages app with Require Face ID, or delete the conversation and empty Recently Deleted.

Can I lock the Messages app on iPhone?

Yes. Touch and hold the Messages icon and tap Require Face ID (or Touch ID or Passcode). Anyone who knows your iPhone passcode can still open it.

Can I hide the Messages app on iPhone?

No. Apps that come with iOS 18 or later can be locked but not hidden. Only apps you download, such as WhatsApp or Signal, can be moved to the Hidden folder.

Which messaging app lets you lock individual chats?

WhatsApp's Chat Lock locks single chats and moves them to a Locked Chats folder. With a secret code, the folder can be hidden so the chats only appear when you type the code in search.

Do deleted iPhone messages really disappear?

Not right away. Deleted messages stay in Recently Deleted for 30 to 40 days, and the other person still has their copy. Empty Recently Deleted to remove them from your devices.
