How to Find Hidden Photos on iPhone (and What to Do When the Album Is Missing)
Short answer: To find hidden photos on iPhone, open Photos, tap Collections, scroll to Utilities and tap Hidden. Tap View Album and unlock it with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. If Hidden isn’t listed, go to Settings > Apps > Photos and turn on Show Hidden Album. Still missing? Check Recently Deleted.
This guide is for anyone who hid photos on their own iPhone and can’t find them again. It covers the Hidden album, the setting that removes it from view, Recently Deleted, your other Apple devices, and other apps that keep photos outside the Photos app. Steps checked against Apple’s documentation for iOS 26 and later.
1. Open the Hidden album
Photos you hide move to the Hidden album. They don’t appear anywhere else in Photos, including your library.
- Open Photos.
- Tap Collections, then scroll down to Utilities.
- Tap Hidden.
- Tap View Album, then unlock with Face ID or Touch ID. Your iPhone passcode also works.
On iPad, you may need to tap the sidebar icon in the upper-left corner first.
Since iOS 16, the Hidden album is locked by default. On older versions of iOS, the album sat under Other Albums on the Albums tab. Some people also move the sections in Photos around, so if Utilities isn’t where you expect, scroll through the whole Collections view.
2. Turn the Hidden album back on
If Hidden isn’t listed under Utilities, the album has been turned off. Your photos are still hidden, not gone.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Photos.
- Turn on Show Hidden Album.
Go back to Photos > Collections > Utilities. Hidden should now be there. On iPhone and iPad this setting is on by default, so someone, possibly you, turned it off.
3. Unhide the photos
Once you’re in the Hidden album:
- Touch and hold a photo or video.
- Tap Unhide.
To unhide several at once, tap Select, tap each item, tap the More button, then tap Unhide. Unhidden items go back to your library, where anyone using your Photos app can see them.
4. Check Recently Deleted
If the photos aren’t in Hidden either, they may have been deleted. Deleted photos and videos stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days. After that, they’re gone for good.
- Open Photos and scroll down to Utilities.
- Tap Recently Deleted.
- Tap View Album and unlock with Face ID or Touch ID.
- Tap a photo or video, tap Recover, then confirm.
Recovered items go back to your library. If you use iCloud Photos, you can also sign in at iCloud.com, open Photos and select Recently Deleted in the sidebar.
5. Look on your other devices and in other apps
Your Mac or iPad. With iCloud Photos turned on, items you hide on one device are hidden on all of them. On a Mac, the Hidden album is off by default: in Photos, choose View > Show Hidden Photo Album, then select Hidden under Utilities in the sidebar.
Hidden apps. Since iOS 18, you can hide a downloaded app with Hide and Require Face ID. It moves to the Hidden folder in App Library. If you used a photo vault app and can’t find its icon, look there.
Other apps. The Photos app only shows what’s in your photo library. Photos saved in a vault app, a locked note or a folder in the Files app stay there. Open that app to find them. A vault app with its own code needs that code; your iPhone passcode won’t open it. For how vaults work, read photo vault apps for iPhone.
What this doesn’t protect
Hiding a photo is a filter, not a lock that only you can open. Knowing where hidden photos live shows the limits:
- Anyone with your iPhone passcode can open the Hidden album and Recently Deleted. Face ID is a shortcut, not a separate code.
- Show Hidden Album turned off keeps the album out of sight, but anyone who knows the setting can turn it back on.
- Other devices on your iCloud Photos show the same Hidden album. Anyone who can unlock your Mac or iPad can open it there too.
- Copies elsewhere. A hidden photo you sent in Messages, shared to an album or uploaded to another cloud service isn’t hidden there.
- Deleted isn’t instantly gone. Deleted photos wait in Recently Deleted for 30 days unless you delete them from there too.
If someone else knows your passcode, a separate code is the only thing that keeps photos out of reach. The Hidden album comparison explains the trade-offs.
How we checked this
We checked every step against Apple’s own documentation on 28 Oct 2026: the Hidden album article (support.apple.com/104987), the recover deleted photos article (support.apple.com/124460), Apple’s Personal Safety User Guide and the iPhone User Guide, for iOS 26 and later. We haven’t tested this guide on a device yet.
Where hidden photos can be
| Place | How to open it | Opens with your iPhone passcode | Visible in the Photos library |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hidden album | Photos > Collections > Utilities > Hidden | Yes | No |
| Hidden album, turned off | Settings > Apps > Photos > Show Hidden Album first | Yes | No |
| Recently Deleted | Photos > Utilities > Recently Deleted (30 days) | Yes | No |
| Photo vault app | Open the app, enter its code | No, if it uses its own code | No |
| Cubbylock (in development) | Designed to open with its own code | Designed not to | No |
Start with Utilities, then the Show Hidden Album setting, then Recently Deleted. If the photos were in another app, open that app. If you want the Hidden album to stay hidden next time, turn off Show Hidden Album again once you’re done.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the Hidden album on iPhone?
Open Photos, tap Collections and scroll down to Utilities. Hidden is listed there. Tap View Album and unlock it with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.
Why can't I see the Hidden album?
Show Hidden Album is probably turned off. Go to Settings > Apps > Photos and turn it on. The album then appears under Utilities again, with your hidden photos still in it.
Are hidden photos deleted?
No. Hidden photos stay in your library. They only move out of the main views into the Hidden album until you unhide them.
How do I unhide photos on iPhone?
Open the Hidden album and unlock it. Touch and hold a photo, then tap Unhide. To unhide several, tap Select, choose them, tap the More button, then Unhide.
Can I see hidden photos on my Mac or iPad?
Yes, if you use iCloud Photos. Items you hide on one device are hidden on your other devices too. On a Mac, choose View > Show Hidden Photo Album in Photos first.
Can I find photos hidden in another app?
Only by opening that app. Photos stored in a vault app, a locked note or a folder in Files don't appear in the Photos app, and a vault app asks for its own code.
